The Last Great Race

A Lieutenant Colonel's Mushing Tale

By Senior Airman Jared Bunn

United States Air Force Lieutenant Colonel Roger "Snowdog" Lee has spent the past three years preparing and training for Iditarod 2017. The Iditarod is a race that spans more than 1,000 miles through the firece Alaskan climate with nothing but a team of sled dogs pulling him along the way.

FISCAL FITNESS

NO PER DIEM FOR ANNUAL TRAINING (AT): Normally you receive per diem when you travel for TDY. However, when you perform AT and government quarters and government mess (meals) are available at the TDY location, you will not receive the meals and incidental expense (M&IE) portion of per diem during the AT days. You will be reimbursed for the lodging expense.

SATO FEE: The fee charged by the Scheduled Airline Ticket Office (SATO) is reimbursable and should be claimed on travel vouchers. The SATO fee claim must be supported by either a receipt (usually written on the SATO itinerary) or a lost receipt form. This document must be included with travel vouchers even though the amount is less than $75.

TDY PHONE CHARGES: Costs associated with personal phone use during temporary duty are not reimbursable and should not be claimed on travel vouchers. It’s good practice to contact finance before incurring questionable TDY travel expenses.

Companies today are adding the word
“smart” to a constellation of different products: water bottles, refrigerators, televisions, and yes, even running sneakers.

Use these new technologies to their fullest, but be skeptical and vigilant that they are just as much a weapon as a tool and the enemy is always watching.

Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. David L. Goldfein named Chief Master Sgt. Kaleth O. Wright to serve as the 18th Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force Nov. 16, 2016.

“In order for us to maintain the strategic advantage we currently possess, our Airmen must be well trained, well led and resilient," said Kaleth. "The demand for air, space and cyber power is always increasing so we must ensure America’s Airmen are resourced and trained to contribute to the joint team.

Kaleth released a paper outlining his three focus areas, training, leadership and resilience, along with goals, objectives and leadership application for each. All of the key focus areas align with the CSAF's priorities of revitalizing squadrons, developing joint leaders and advancing multi-functional, multidimensional C2.
Key Focus Areas

Training - Ready to Fight
The Air Force’s mission is to Fly, Fight and Win in Air, Space and Cyber… we don’t win without preparation…we don’t win without training.

Goal - Ensure every Airman is properly trained and ready to perform their
core mission at all times.

Leadership - Ready to Lead

Deliberately developing the next generation of enlisted leaders.

Goal - Develop the Next Generation of Enlisted Leaders.

Resilience - Ready for Life
Build resilient Airmen and families to help them manage stress, instability and unpredictability.

Goal: Build resilient Airmen and families to help them manage stress, instability
and unpredictability.

“Author Jim Rohn once noted, ‘We should not wish for less problems but instead wish for more skills todeal with them’,” he said.

According to the new CMSAF, a focus on deliberate and focused training, effective talent management and total Airmen and family wellness ensures mission success in every domain, and in every location across the globe.
