The 477th Fighter Group is Air Force Reserve Command's first F-22A Raptor unit. The 477th FG is a classic associate unit responsible for recruiting, training, developing and retaining Reserve Citizen Airmen to support 3d Wing and Expeditionary Air Force mission requirements.

The 477th FG is a classic associate: An active duty (Regular) component unit retains principal responsibility for a weapon system(s), which it shares with one or more reserve component units. Active and Reserve component units retain separate organizational structures and chains-of-command.

The 477th FG was originally established in May 1943 as a Bombardment Group to train the legendary World War II aviators known as the Tuskegee Airmen. Their legacy of service before self and courage under fire lives on in the 477th Fighter Group, reactivated on October 1, 2007 at Elmendorf Air Force Base as the first Air Force Reserve unit in Alaska to fly, maintain, and support the world's most capable fighter aircraft.

The 477th FG provides a combat-ready force of approximately 300 Air Reserve Technicians, Traditional Reservists, and civil servants assigned to operations, maintenance, medical and mission support units. Subordinate units include the 302d Fighter Squadron, 477th Maintenance Squadron, 477th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron, 477th Aerospace Medicine Flight, 477th Force Support Squadron and 477th Operations Support Flight.

The men and women of the 477th FG are integrated with their active duty Air Force partners in most F-22A mission areas increasing efficiency and overall combat capability while retaining Reserve administrative support and career enhancement. The 477th FG leverages the traditional Reserve component strengths of experience and continuity to fly, and fight, and win as unrivaled wingmen on the total force team at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson.
