JBER releases winter weather uniform wear guidance

Winter is here, do you know your uniform wear regulations? JBER has a local supplement on Air Force E-publishing, AFI36-2903_PACAFSUP_JBELMENDORF-RICHARDSONSUP 31 OCTOBER 2014, as well as a recently released Modification to Winter Weather Uniform Wear (JBER-69), which address cold-weather gear especially for the climate here in Anchorage. Below are a few topics associated with cold-weather wear:

 

1. Gloves: 6.3.8.4.5.

Individuals can wear black or sage green gloves with the Air Battle Uniform, Flight Dress Uniform and all authorized outer garments to the ABU or FDU. Only black gloves may be worn with the service dress uniform and all approved outer garments worn with the blue service and service dress uniforms. You can only wear gloves when wearing an outer garment such as a fleece jacket or a parka.

2. Scarf: 6.3.8.2.

JBER Airmen can wear a black scarf with all authorized outer garments except the pullover and cardigan sweaters.The scarf must be tucked in and will only be worn with an outer garment.

3. Earmuffs: 6.3.8.3.

You can wear black earmuffs with all authorized outer garments and may wrap around either the top or rear of the head. Earmuffs may be made of any material but may only be worn with an outer garment.

4. Fleece: 6.1.10.2.

The sage green fleece is authorized for wear as an outer garment with the ABU only, it can only be worn over the ABU coat and it is not authorized to be worn solely over a t-shirt or thermals.

5. Watch Cap: 6.2.7.4. / 6.2.8.4.

The Black Watch Cap may be worn with any uniform combination except the Mess Dress and Semi-formal.
The Sage Green Watch Cap may be worn when wearing ABU and FDU authorized outer garments or the physical training uniform. Watch caps made of performance materials including fleece, neoprene and polypropylene are authorized unless restricted by safety directives.

The watch cap should be pulled down snugly and the bottom edge of the cap may be folded to allow proper fit, but not rolled. The back of the cap should run across the nape of the neck and the front of cap should not be touching eyebrows nor higher than center of forehead; no hair should be protruding from front of cap.

6. Parkas: The GEN III-Level 7 Extreme Cold-Weather Parka is authorized to be worn with any uniform combination. It should have the name tape, USAF and rank insignia affixed in the same manner as the sage green fleece jacket. The NB2 (short) Parka is authorized for wear if available but is no longer authorized for new purchase. The NBS is not authorized for wear with the Service Dress, Mess Dress, Semi-Formal Dress or PTU.

7. Balaclava: A sage green or black full or half face mask/balaclava or hood fleece five-way style hat is authorized when wearing ABU and FDU uniform combinations. It may be warn as a face mask, hood and face mask combination or as a neck warmer. If it is worn as a hood, appropriate headgear must also be worn.
